Social Security changes online access

The Social Security Administration has made a small change in accessing your account online.

Beginning June 10, 2017 the SSA will offer two methods to check the identification of Social Security account holders. In order to ensure better protection for the consumer, the account holder will need a “one-time code” to log into the system. They will require that you enter a personal “code” that will either be texted to your cell phone or emailed to your preferred email address.

Originally, there was no code needed, and then they only offered the code sent via text. Now email is another option for those who do not have a smart phone or live somewhere with spotty cell phone access.

It is important to everyone to set up their online account with the SSA – even if you are years away from taking retirement benefits. By establishing a personal online account, you are preventing cyber thieves from setting up an unauthorized account with your SS number, since there can only be ONE account per Social Security number.

If you set up your account first, the bad guys cannot do it. So please go to www.ssa.gov today and set up your online account, if for no other reason than to protect yourself.

All the best… Mark
